Member of the Month - Elaine!

Elaine has been with us for about 2 and half years now, and has been a huge part of the community ever since. She regularly comes to the 7pm and Saturday morning classes, and has been so consistent with showing up and keeping her routine since the beginning. She is always looking to get better, and asks for help and her Coach’s advice on the little things she can do, in and out of the gym to help her reach her health and fitness goals. She even recently joined our Level Up program to put in the extra time/effort to achieve her goals. She is a great example to everyone on how setting yourself goals can keep you consistent and give you the motivation you need to keep working towards them. Read more below to get to know her!

What is your background in Fitness/sport?

When I was younger I was not very athletic and didn't join any sports teams at school (in fact I was usually the last picked for teams in P.E. class!). It wasn't until my kids were older that I started going to the gym regularly and got into Zumba and kickboxing and eventually CrossFit.

When did you start CrossFit/At Vic City?

I started in December 2020 after months of being a couch potato during COVID. I eased into it with a series of ten 1-1 coaching sessions with Cam then started going to the Fundamentals classes in early February 2021.

How many CrossFit Opens have you done?

I completed one so far in 2022. I completed two events at this year's Open but unfortunately due to a death in the family was not able to do the final event. I plan to participate each year from now on!

Favourite memories in the gym?

Any time I didn't think I could do something but by pushing myself somehow making it happen. For example, I can't remember if it was during one of this year's Open Events or last November's partner competition but for one of the events you score points for each double under rep. I had never done a double under up to that point so I was fully expecting a score of zero however with seconds to spare somehow I squeezed in one double under!

What is your favourite movement?

Deadlifts. This is another area where I surprised myself again. When I first started deadlifts I remember Andy telling me that soon I'd be lifting my body weight to which I said to him no way that's too heavy for me. Well now my one rep max has far exceeded my body weight :-)

Least favourite?

Anything that involves cardio (especially running and wall balls!) and squats (front and back squats).

Favourite WOD or type?

EMOMs. I think I can do anything for a minute.

What do you enjoy the most about CrossFit?

The people. The coaches energy, humour and dedication are very motivating. The fun community - I love all the people I've met during my time at the gym and getting to know the regulars in my classes.

Most recent achievement that you are proud of?

The April 12th partner WOD when I beat my time from February by 2 mins.

What goals are you working towards right now?

The unassisted strict pull up has always seemed so out of reach for me. I've never been able to do one without using bands. I've set a goal to do five by the end of this year and I've signed up for the Level Up program to focus on this.

Elaine, we love your hard work and dedication to yourself, but the main thing that stands out is the smile you bring to every class.

Elaine is always cheering on her classmates, and welcoming the new faces to the gym. Being a regular in the Fundamentals classes, a lot of our new members are always welcomed so kindly by her and she’s always getting to know them, and as a new member that goes a long way when coming into a brand new space. We all know the feeling of walking into a new class, and how stressful that can feel, and we coaches thank you for always being so welcoming to our new members.

Keep up the great work Elaine, and we can’t wait to see you get those first unassisted pull-ups in no time! Be sure to give her a high five next time you see her in class :)
